Rawkstar! 06/24/2010

When I turned 18 and rushed out into the world to be on my own, part of my new adventure was to swear off vegetables forever.  I hated them and in my parents house, vegetables were a staple at the dinner table everyday and I was required to eat them (poor me - so mistreated!).

I was very healthy growing up for it. After a few years of being out in the world, though, things started to change.  By body started to become unbalanced and I was unwell.  As I started approaching 30 I decided that I’m not getting any younger and if I don’t change my lifestyle - my way of eating - it wasn’t going to get better.  I started eating salads - and actually enjoying them (what a concept!) and tried to incorporate other veggies, but it seemed impossible!  Then, I was introduced to the Raw Food concept and was intrigued but I doubted there was any way this meat and potatoes, fried wing, french fry, pizza loving girl was going to really change.  I was invited to dinner at 105 Degrees - have you been there?  OMG.  This stuff is raw?  AND healthy?  And EDIBLE?  It was like a light bulb came on. There’s hope yet!

My aunt Michelle is a raw food guru and when she had talked to me about it before I just had the attitude of ‘I wish - but yeah right’.  No way that stuff tastes good. But after actually trying it, I was amazed - and hopeful!  Since then, I have heard tons of life changing stories, and read tons of articles & info on Raw Food and the benefits it has.  The list seems literally endless.  Balanced hormones, pain disappearing, improved eyesight, weight loss, increased energy, increased happiness, healthier more youthful skin, stronger bones.... prevents cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, cures diabetes, decrease of anxiety and depression and similar psychological chemical imbalances.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely not a replacement for modern medicine or a cure all.  And it doesn’t make you healthy overnight.  But the benefits and real life stories of people’s health improving is hard to ignore.  So, I’m starting in slow.  For my birthday I got a good juicer, one that can do wheatgrass, too.  I’ve also inherited a high speed commercial blender.  I’ve started with simple recipes and just add one thing at a time.  I’ve started growing my own wheatgrass and making my own homemade almond milk and started buying only organic fruits and veggies.

So, what’s my point.  Well, I just know that we see a lot of people with some serious issues from fibromyalgia, chronic pain, arthritis, to problems with weight and emotional imbalances. When I see others facing issues that effect their everyday wellbeing in a negative way, I want to help.  It’s why I got into the spa business in the first place.  I encourage you to take a look at how you feel - what health issues are you facing?  Are you run down and exhausted feeling by mid-afternoon? Are you stressed out with no time for things you really enjoy? Getting massage and spa therapies can make a really big difference.  But it can’t do it alone, and if you can learn to incorporate things into your daily life, that will help combat these negatives.  Start Simple.

SLEEP.  What can you change to ensure your getting enough sleep and getting to bed early enough? Giving your body time to rest and slow down and recharge is so important to overall your overall health.

WATER.  How much water or healthy fluids (like herbal tea) are you taking in? Drinking plenty of water is vital to keeping your body hydrated and detoxified which will increase your energy levels.

PACE.  How are you starting out your days? Giving yourself plenty of time in the morning to get ready for your day helps set the pace of your day.  Start with 15 minutes of abdominal breathing or yoga to start your day off calm.

NOURISH.  Put down that coke and candy bar.  Find healthy alternatives that you like and enjoy.  Instead of something loaded with sugar (which is what feeds cancer and increases risk of heart disease and diabetes) try a fruit smoothie or a citrus carrot cocktail.  Tip: Also eating 0.6 grams of protein per pound of body weight is essential for muscle support as well as pancreas health.

EXERCISE. Even if it’s just a 20minute walk every other day.  Just do something.  You don’t have to run a marathon or become the next body builder champion. And stretch daily.  Stretching helps release tons of tension and just plain helps you feel better. :)

Take small simple steps to better health. Cheers!
